Winter/Spring 2010
Class Registrations can be made in person at Pieces or by phone with credit card information. Most
classes have a supply list so be sure you receive one when you register. You will receive a 10% discount on
required materials the day you sign up for the class as well as the day the class meets.
"Bring a Buddy" and register to take a class together and each of you will get 10% off the registration
fee for that class.
Cancellation Policy:
If you are unable to attend a class for which you have registered, you need to cancel at least 7 days
before the class starts in order to receive a full refund in the form of a store credit. If you must miss a class that
meets for two or more sessions, you will receive any handouts provided for that class. However, no refunds,
credits or transfers of fees from the missed class will be given.
Occasionally, we may find it necessary to cancel a class if minimum enrollment is not met or due to
inclement weather. If we do so, you will receive a full class fee refund. If you choose to use your refund as a
credit toward fees for a different class or toward store purchases, you must do so within 90 days of the class
cancellation.

Applique' The Back Basting Way

Imagine appliqué with no templates, no multiple tracing, minimal preparations and extreme
accuracy. Just one step and you are ready to start stitching. For me it actually seems faster
too. After trying this method, most students prefer it to their previous methods. Some
appliqué experience is helpful, but beginners are welcome too. Join us for a day of fun
stitching. We will be working on a "Baltimore"
Style block (pattern provided) or you may bring a block or your choice.
Batik Hearts

Show your love with this fun heart designed quilt. It looks trickier than it is. Set the
hearts on point; add a double nine-patch and you'll be amazed at the results. You will learn
speedy angle corners, using the weft of the fabric to your advantage, and creating illusions.
This looks great in monochromatic or multicolor.
Binding Basics

Learn to apply straight binding to your quilt in a painless and efficient way. Also we will talk about other
methods for finishing your quilt, such as bias cut binding and prairie points. Take the mystery out of binding.
Block Butler

Create a handy and flat tote to store and transport your blocks - in - progress. The 20" size is large
enough to handle most blocks and if you use flannel on the inside it can double as a portable design wall.

Dig through your stash and pull out those light and dark fat quarters to create this fun
and easy quilt! Stack 'em, Slash 'em, Switch 'em and Stitch 'em up to make this unique
"Crazy Style" Boston Log Cabin. As long as you have a good contrast between light and
dark, almost any design on the fabric will look great. The sample was made with light and
dark floral fabrics and finishes at 66" square.

Yes! Finally a class to help take the mystery out of calculating yardage for your quilts.
You will find out how to take a quilt block and build a quilt will discovering how to figure out

Double Wedding Ring

This beautiful traditional quilt can seem intimidating but using the precise templates
from Quilting in the Heartland makes this quilt much easier to put together. In class we will

Create a lovely appliqué quilt in this once -a-month class. The Floral Bouquet quilt has a lovely center
medallion surrounded by several appliqué and pieced borders. Along the way learn several different appliqué
techniques and where they are best applied. You'll meet new friends along the way and enjoy a lovely quilt.
Hand-Dying Cotton Fabrics

In this class we will learn the basics of dying cotton fabrics with Procion dyes. I will show you how to
manipulate your fabric to create interesting patterns and apply colors to achieve unique hand dyes for your

Learn the style of Hawaiian appliqué while making a contemporary wall hanging. Learn the easy way to

Learn to Paper Piece

Paper Piecing or foundation piecing lets you make near perfect points and blocks. But
are you not sure where to start or having trouble understanding the technique involved in
Paper Piecing? Then join us for this workshop where we will be learning the basics for
getting the fabric the right size, getting it aligned up correctly and all the other "mysteries"
involved in doing paper piecing. No pressure as we will be working with "practice" blocks
and fabrics so you can understand how do to it before you take on a full quilt project. Join
us for this relaxed and informative workshop to learn this great technique.

In this four-week course, you will construct a variety of blocks using several techniques, including halfsquare
triangles, strip piecing and fusible appliqué. This class is good for the beginner who is just getting
started as well as an accomplished quilter wanting to make their first sampler.

One Block Wonder Encore

this class, students will learn the technique to create stunning cubes that are solid, hollow

Prerequisite: "One Block Wonder" class if you are planning on incorporating the blocks into
your One Block Wonder quilt. If you just want to make cubes and create a stand alone wall
hanging or just learn the technique, then no prior class required. Just be aware the actual
"One Block Wonder" hexagon technique will not be taught in this class.
One Block Wonder - Hexagons

Have lots of fun while you create this very unique quilt. In class we will learn how to create a
kaleidoscopic watercolor using hexagons and one fabric! Hexagons! Don't be afraid . . . no hand piecing, no
set in seams, just straight seams! We will use a "stack-n-cut" technique to create our hexagons and then have
a lot of fun making and arranging them into a unique design. Book required.Sign up early - class is limited to eight students.
Trapunto Machine Applique' Block of the Month

Take a new look at machine appliqué with Sherie's technique. By using a special Appliqué
Foundation Paper (available at Pieces Quilt Shop), and techniques, gives the look of hand
appliqué, yet is stitched entirely by machine. Plus it's easy and saves time. When the
project is completed and washed, the foundation becomes soft fibers and gives a trapunto
look to the appliqué piece. We will be creating a 9 block appliqué quilt by Blackbird
Designs. "Where the Cold Wind Blows" book purchase necessary.
Summer Wheat (or Mini Lone Stars)

I love the Lone Star quilts but a bed size can be difficult to manage. Reducing the size
to a mini Lone Star makes then much more manageable. Will be rotary cutting and strip
piecing are Lone Stars together plus learning about Y intersections.

Winding Ways

Wind your ways with gentle curves across your quilt. This is made simple with the use of
acrylic templates to make the cutting simple and Sherie's special techniques to stitch the
curves. You will no longer need to fear curved seams with these techniques. Use 2 fabrics,
or several fabrics of two colors, to create the illusion of complex circles. It is really easier
than it looks.
Wool Applique' "Flowers From My Garden"

In this Block-of-the-Month class you will create a beautiful wool quilt. Sherie will teach you several
techniques for templates, placement, block prep, appliqué, embroidery, piecing, and quilting to work with

Wool Dying

Come and learn Sherie's unique method for hand-dying wool.
Session 1: Start with cream wool, apply the dye and watch the colors blend. The result is a piece of wool
with several colors or just a few.... you're the creator. Sherie takes the wool home for a slow dry and steam,
and then returns it to you ready for your next appliqué project.
